What the classes are
In the US, high visibility apparel is commonly sorted into classes under the ANSI/ISEA 107 standard. Higher classes have more bright background and reflective material and more body coverage. Class 1 is for lower-risk settings away from traffic. Class 2 is the common choice near moving traffic. Class 3 adds more coverage, including sleeves, for higher-risk work.
Class 2 vs Class 3
The practical difference is coverage and visibility. Class 3 garments cover more of the body and are meant to be seen from farther away and in more conditions. Check the current standard text for exact material amounts.
How to find out which class you need
- Ask the client, general contractor or site owner what their safety plan requires.
- Check your state transportation rules if you work near public roads.
- Check OSHA and your insurer for requirements that apply to your work.
